PHILOSOPHY
Our work is rooted in the belief that architecture is a way of knowing the world and of knowing ourselves. We design spaces which are deeply connected to the communities that they serve by memorializing their aspirations, beliefs and commitments. Our projects strive to imprint on the land that they inhabit in respectful, meaningful and sustainable ways. We think of design as a prompt for unpacking nuanced problems in order to generate thoughtful, restorative and graceful interventions. Our projects exhibit diverse influences that bridge between people, cultures and histories. Our visual vocabulary is cosmopolitan and layered; it is positioned to cultivate meaning, pleasure and rootedness in our spaces.
Saira founded Meimar after 15+ years of working at architectural design firms, and in architecture adjacent industries. She has seen a wide range of cultural, institutional and residential projects through from ideation to construction (including theatres, libraries, universities, commercial and residential towers) whilst working as an architect at FXCollaborative, Davis Brody Bond and HMA2 Architects. She has a cross-disciplinary background: she received her MA (Cantab) at the University of Cambridge, in English Literature, and her Master of Architecture degree, from Cornell University. Her work is underscored by rigor, inventiveness and by a firm belief that strategic, concept-driven design enables us to alleviate some of the most significant challenges that we face today.
She is passionate about communicating the stories and aspirations of designers and their clients, and these concepts have found expression in a broad range of projects. She has edited anthologies on design and visual culture for Oxford University Press. She has conceptualized, scripted and presented (on-screen) a series of internationally televised documentaries on contemporary art and architecture in South Asia. She has taught courses on architecture, and its engagement with the body, as a visiting faculty member at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. In recent years, some of her architecture and furniture projects have been exhibited at the Kunsthal Museum in Rotterdam, Battery Park in New York City, and at the Bibliowicz Gallery at Cornell University.
